Care guide at a glance
Scarus quoyi
Description
A true parrotfish with fused beak-like teeth, the terminal males in brilliant green and pink. Spectacular, and a genuinely large and destructive aquarium animal.
Feeding
Grazes algae and coral rock, scraping surfaces with fused teeth. Needs dried marine algae several times daily, plus spirulina foods and live rock to work on.
Compatibility
Not reef safe - it scrapes coral rock and will damage corals directly. Peaceful toward fish.
Behaviour and personality
Grazes constantly and produces a very large volume of fine sand-like waste, which is exactly what parrotfish do in the wild.
Before you buy
Two serious issues: it reaches around 35-40 cm, and it grazes rock continuously, producing substantial fine waste that filtration must handle. Not suitable for a reef tank or a standard fish-only system.
