Carinotetraodon irrubesco
Description
A small freshwater puffer with a red tail and red eyes, the males displaying a dramatic dorsal and ventral keel. Characterful, intelligent and thoroughly untrustworthy.
Feeding
Carnivorous with a requirement for hard-shelled prey. Small snails are essential to wear down continuously growing teeth. Supplement with frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp.
Compatibility
A determined fin-nipper despite its size. Best in a species tank. Will destroy the fins of any slow or long-finned tankmate and will eat shrimp and snails.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers and manoeuvres precisely on tiny fins. Males display by raising a keel along the belly and back. Highly aware of the room.
Before you buy
Needs a steady supply of small snails, so many keepers run a separate snail-breeding tank. Genuinely not a community fish - the nipping is persistent and damaging.
