Care guide at a glance
Pygoplites diacanthus
Description
A boldly banded angelfish in orange, white and blue with a yellow tail. Spectacular, and with a reputation for refusing to eat that depends heavily on where it was collected.
Feeding
A sponge and tunicate feeder in the wild. Requires sponge-based angelfish preparations, mysis, clam and nori several times daily. Red Sea specimens adapt considerably better than Indo-Pacific ones.
Compatibility
Generally peaceful but not reliably reef safe - will sample soft corals, clams and zoanthids. Best with calm tankmates in a large mature system.
Behaviour and personality
Deliberate and shy on arrival, picking constantly at rockwork once settled.
Before you buy
Provenance matters more than with almost any other marine fish. Red Sea specimens have a much better feeding record than Indo-Pacific ones, which frequently refuse food entirely. A mature tank with live rock to graze is close to essential.
