Neocirrhites armatus
Description
A brilliant scarlet hawkfish that perches among branching corals, watching. Small, hardy and one of the most photogenic reef fish available.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, chopped prawn, clam and marine pellets.
Compatibility
Reef safe with corals but will eat ornamental shrimp, small crabs and very small fish. Generally peaceful toward fish it cannot eat.
Behaviour and personality
Perches on coral branches propped on thickened pectoral fins, then darts to take prey. Lacks a swim bladder, so it rests rather than hovers.
Before you buy
Less aggressive than most hawkfish and one of the better choices for a reef, but it will still clear a tank of ornamental shrimp. Prefers branching coral or rockwork to perch in.
