Care guide at a glance
Heniochus diphreutes
Description
A black-and-white banded butterflyfish with a long trailing dorsal pennant, shoaling in open water. The reef-safe alternative to the very similar Heniochus acuminatus.
Feeding
Planktivore. Frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, chopped prawn and marine pellets, twice daily.
Compatibility
Peaceful and generally reef safe, unlike most butterflyfish. Keep in a group of three or more, as it is a genuine schooling species.
Behaviour and personality
Shoals in open water feeding from the water column, rather than picking at rockwork.
Before you buy
Frequently confused with Heniochus acuminatus, which is not reef safe and does not school. Check the identification carefully. This species prefers slightly cooler water and needs to be kept in a group.
