Meiacanthus smithii
Description
A pale, elegant blenny with a dark dorsal stripe, swimming freely in open water rather than perching. Armed with venomous fangs, which makes it almost immune to predation.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, marine pellets and some algae-based food.
Compatibility
Reef safe and peaceful. The venomous fangs mean larger fish leave it alone, so it can be kept with predators that would otherwise eat a fish this size.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers and swims in open water with a distinctive hopping motion, rather than perching on rock like most blennies.
Before you buy
The fangs are defensive rather than aggressive and it poses no threat to tankmates or to you in normal handling. One of the easiest and most useful small marine fish.
