Description

Spanish Hogfish (Bodianus rufus)
Overview

The Spanish Hogfish is a vibrant and hardy reef species admired for its brilliant yellow and purple coloration and bold, energetic personality. Active and inquisitive, it makes a stunning centerpiece in large marine aquariums and is well-loved for its resilience and adaptability.

Origin

Native to the tropical Western Atlantic, including Florida, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico, the Spanish Hogfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, often found swimming above reef structures in search of food.

Feeding

A carnivorous species with a hearty appetite, the Spanish Hogfish thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and marine pellets. Feed two to three times daily to promote growth, color vibrancy, and overall health.

Tank Mates

Best suited to larger community aquariums with robust or semi-aggressive species. Compatible with tangs, groupers, wrasses, and triggerfish, but may eat very small invertebrates or crustaceans. Avoid housing with delicate or timid fish.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, particularly as it matures. The Spanish Hogfish may become territorial in confined spaces, so provide plenty of room and rockwork to reduce conflict and stress.

Experience Level

Ideal for intermediate to advanced marine hobbyists. This hardy species adapts well to captivity and tolerates a wide range of conditions but requires a spacious, well-filtered aquarium to accommodate its active nature (minimum 125 gallons recommended).

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

Stable, high-quality water and ample swimming space will ensure your Spanish Hogfish thrives and displays its striking tropical colors.
