Care guide at a glance
Myrichthys maculosus
Description
A long, pale snake eel covered in dark spots, spending most of its time buried in sand with only the head showing. Genuinely unusual and a determined escape artist.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen prawn, squid, cockle and chunks of marine fish, offered on tongs two or three times a week.
Compatibility
Will eat any fish or crustacean it can swallow. Best in a species tank or with large fish. Not reef safe with invertebrates.
Behaviour and personality
Buries in sand during the day, emerging at night to hunt by scent. Moves in a snake-like motion across the substrate.
Before you buy
The tank must be sealed absolutely - snake eels are among the most persistent escapees in the marine hobby and will find any gap around pipework or lids. Needs a deep fine sand bed to bury in.
