Ancistrus temminckii
Description
A warm yellow-orange bristlenose with a soft, even colour across the body. Hardy, useful and unbothered by most tankmates.
Feeding
Primarily herbivorous. Sinking algae wafers, blanched courgette and cucumber, and a genuine piece of bogwood to rasp on. Some meaty frozen food occasionally.
Compatibility
Peaceful toward other species and largely nocturnal. Males become territorial with one another over caves, so allow one cave per male or keep a single male.
Behaviour and personality
Spends the day tucked under wood or in a cave and works surfaces after dark. Males develop the branched facial bristles that give the fish its name.
Before you buy
Bogwood is not optional - the fibre is part of the diet and these fish do poorly without it. They are effective algae grazers but still need feeding properly.
