Care guide at a glance
Amphiprion ocellaris
Description
The familiar orange-and-white clownfish, captive-bred rather than wild-caught. Tank-bred stock accepts prepared foods immediately, adapts readily to aquarium life and puts no pressure on wild populations.
Feeding
Readily takes marine pellets, flake and frozen mysis and brine shrimp. Accepts prepared food from day one, unlike wild specimens.
Compatibility
Reef safe and peaceful with most tankmates. Keep singly or as a bonded pair; two unpaired adults will fight. Can be territorial around its chosen host.
Behaviour and personality
Bold, quick to recognise its keeper and endlessly watchable. Will host in an anemone if one is present, and frequently adopts a coral or powerhead instead.
Before you buy
An anemone is not required and is considerably harder to keep than the fish. This is the single best starter marine fish, and captive-bred stock is hardier than wild-caught.
