Description

Tiger Barb

Tiger Barb's are a semi-aggressive species, which are very lively and playful and prefer to be in schools. They will thrive in a well-planted tank with soft, slightly acidic water, but do leave plenty of space for swimming. The Tiger Barb is a very active fish, but be cautious that they may nip the fins of larger, slower moving fish.

Features
Approx. size: 1-2" / 3-5cm
Maximum size: 3"
Origin: Indonesia
Family: Cyprinidae
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Ideal number kept together: 6+

Water conditions
Our conditions: pH 7.5
Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: KH 4-10
Water flow: low/moderate
Temperature: 22–26 °C

Ease of care
Easy. Tiger barbs are very hardy but prefer softer water, semi-aggressive, can fin-nip long-finned fish, good with other barbs. Shoaling fish.

Diet
Omnivore - The main food we recommend would be small granules, flake and pellets. Mixing in some live or frozen brine, or other fresh alternatives can help enhance their health.

Compatibility
Semi-aggressive, house with other peaceful fish such as smaller barbs - no long-finned fish, like guppies. Will shoal in larger aquariums.

Breeding
Egg layers, occasional breeders in captivity. If trying to breed Tiger Barbs, house a number of Barbs in the same aquarium until they pair off. After a pair has developed, the female will lay the eggs and the male will follow behind to fertilize. The fry will be free-swimming after about a week.

Life Span
Tiger barbs have a lifespan of 5+ years in perfect conditions.
