Overview
The Trimac Three Spot Cichlid, also known as the “Three-Spot Cichlid,” is a large, robust, and colorful South American cichlid. Its name comes from the three distinctive dark spots along its body, complemented by striking red and blue iridescence. Highly active and visually impressive, it makes a dramatic centerpiece in large freshwater aquariums.
OriginNative to Central and South America, primarily found in rivers and streams across Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia. Prefers slow-moving waters with sandy or rocky substrates and abundant hiding spots.
FeedingOmnivorous and voracious:
- High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes
- Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, and mysis
- Occasional live feeder fish for conditioning (ensure healthy sources)
- Some vegetable matter, including spirulina or blanched vegetables
Semi-aggressive. Best housed with:
- Other large, robust Central/South American cichlids
- Large peaceful fish that can hold their own
Avoid: Small or delicate fish, as they may be harassed or eaten.
Moderate to high. Territorial, especially during breeding. Provide ample space, caves, and visual barriers to reduce aggression.
