Description

Tuxedo Hogfish (Bodianus bilunulatus)
Overview

The Tuxedo Hogfish, also known as the Blackspot or Split-Level Hogfish, is a stunning and hardy marine species named for its elegant “tuxedo-like” coloration—contrasting white, yellow, and black markings across its body. Active, intelligent, and striking in appearance, it makes a dynamic addition to larger marine aquariums.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region—from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii and Japan—the Tuxedo Hogfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky slopes, where it forages for small crustaceans and invertebrates among the coral.

Feeding

A carnivorous species, the Tuxedo Hogfish thrives on a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and high-quality frozen or pellet foods. Feed two to three times per day to maintain health and coloration.

Tank Mates

Best kept with other medium to large semi-aggressive species such as wrasses, tangs, triggers, and angelfish. Avoid housing with very small fish or ornamental shrimp, which may be viewed as prey.

Aggression

Semi-aggressive, especially as it matures. This species may become territorial toward similar-looking fish or other hogfish. Providing ample rockwork, caves, and swimming space helps minimize aggression.

Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. The Tuxedo Hogfish is hardy and adapts well to captivity but requires a large, well-maintained system (minimum 125 gallons) with strong filtration and stable conditions.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
  • pH: 8.1 – 8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8 – 12 dKH

With proper care and a spacious, stable environment, the Tuxedo Hogfish will thrive and showcase its elegant, high-contrast coloration—living up to its refined name.
