Canthigaster valentini
Description
A small saddled puffer patterned in cream and dark brown with orange speckling and bright blue eyes. Full of character, and thoroughly untrustworthy around invertebrates.
Feeding
Carnivorous with hard-shelled prey in the wild. Needs shell-on foods - krill, whole mussel, clam and snails - to wear down continuously growing teeth. Supplement with mysis and marine pellets.
Compatibility
Not reef safe. Will eat ornamental shrimp, snails, crabs, feather dusters and clams, and will nip corals and the fins of slow tankmates. Best in a fish-only system.
Behaviour and personality
Inquisitive, deliberate and highly aware of the room. Quick to recognise its keeper and beg for food.
Before you buy
Charming, and a real problem in a reef tank. The teeth grow continuously and must be worn down with hard-shelled food, or the fish eventually cannot feed. One per tank.
