Care guide at a glance
Ostracion cubicus
Description
A comically square, bright yellow fish with black spots, hovering on tiny whirring fins. Utterly charming as a juvenile, and carrying a serious risk to the rest of the tank.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Frozen mysis, clam, chopped prawn, marine pellets and dried algae, fed two or three times daily.
Compatibility
Peaceful and slow-moving. Not reef safe with small invertebrates. Must not be housed with aggressive or nippy fish, which will stress it.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers and manoeuvres slowly on small rapidly beating fins. Inquisitive and unafraid, which is part of the problem.
Before you buy
Read this before buying. When severely stressed or dying, this fish releases a potent toxin that can kill every other fish in the aquarium, including itself. It also loses the bright yellow and grows to over 40 cm. It is a specialist fish for a very large species system, not a community reef.
