Forcipiger longirostris
Description
A brilliant yellow butterflyfish with a black eye patch and an extraordinarily long, fine snout used to pick prey from deep crevices.
Feeding
A highly specialised feeder taking small crustaceans and tube-feet from deep within rockwork. Requires live mysis, enriched frozen mysis and blackworm, several times daily. Many specimens are reluctant to accept prepared food.
Compatibility
Peaceful. Will pick at tubeworms, small ornamental shrimp and some corals. Best in a mature fish-only or lightly stocked system.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers close to rockwork, probing crevices continuously with the long snout.
Before you buy
Considerably harder to feed than the similar and much easier Forcipiger flavissimus, which is often sold under the same name. Check which species you are getting. Needs a mature tank with live rock fauna.
