Antennarius maculatus
Description
A warty ambush predator in a yellow colour phase, fishing for prey with a modified dorsal lure. Extraordinary to look at, and an efficient way to lose the rest of your fish.
Feeding
Carnivorous ambush predator. Meaty foods offered on feeding tongs - whole prawn, silversides and chunks of fish - two or three times a week rather than daily.
Compatibility
Will swallow any fish or shrimp it can fit in its enormous mouth, which is most things up to its own body length. Keep in a species tank or with fish clearly too large to eat.
Behaviour and personality
Sits motionless on rock, camouflaged, waving the lure. Strikes faster than the eye can follow. Colour phase can change over time.
Before you buy
Not a community fish under any circumstances. Feed with tongs rather than live fish, and avoid overfeeding - anglerfish are prone to obesity.
