Heterodontus zebra
Description
A small bottom-dwelling bullhead shark boldly banded in dark brown over cream, with a blunt head and prominent dorsal spines. A genuine shark, and a serious long-term commitment.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Whole squid, prawn, cockle, mussel and chunks of marine fish, fed two or three times a week. Crushes hard-shelled prey.
Compatibility
Will eat any fish or invertebrate it can catch. Suitable only with large fish in a very large system. Not reef safe.
Behaviour and personality
Largely nocturnal, resting under overhangs during the day and cruising the bottom at night. Placid but powerful.
Before you buy
This is a cool-water shark reaching around a metre. It needs a chilled system, an enormous footprint rather than depth, and a decade-plus commitment. It is not suitable for a standard reef or fish-only tank under any circumstances, and buyers should be assessed before sale.
