Dendrochirus zebra
Description
A compact lionfish banded in red and cream with broad fan-like pectoral fins that it spreads when displaying. Smaller and more manageable than the common lionfish.
Feeding
Carnivorous ambush predator. Frozen prawn, silversides and chunks of marine fish on tongs, two or three times a week. Often needs weaning off live food.
Compatibility
Will eat any fish or shrimp it can swallow. Reef safe with corals. Best with fish clearly too large to be eaten.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers slowly among rockwork with fins spread, cornering prey against surfaces before striking.
Before you buy
Venomous dorsal spines - the sting is serious and requires medical attention. Handle with great care during maintenance. Smaller than a common lionfish but the same predatory and safety rules apply.
