L. eltoni | Shrimp named after Elton John's Shoes
A researcher has discovered a new species of crustacean, and named it in honour of Elton John's shoes.
The shrimp-like creature was found in Indonesia, and the scientist decided to name him after Sir Elton John. We couldn't display an actual image of L. eltoni because of copyright issues, but we do have an artists impression below...

The crustacean, L. eltoni, was found inside another reef invertebrate. James Thomas from the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography in Florida, who discovered the shrimp-like creature, explained in a statement:
"I named the species in honour of Sir Elton John because I have listened to his music in my lab during my entire scientific career. So, when this unusual crustacean with a greatly enlarged appendage appeared under my microscope after a day of collecting, an image of the shoes Elton John wore as the 'Pinball Wizard' came to mind."
The "Elton John" crustacean, Leucothoe eltoni, was initially discovered in the coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Researchers behind the study were later contacted by scientists in Hawaii, where L. eltoni had arrived as an invasive species.
