Description

Debauwi Catfish

Pareutropius debauwi is a species of fish in the Schilbeidae, the schilbid catfishes. Its common name is African glass catfish. It is native to Africa, where it can be found in the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon. The fish can be found in a number of central African rivers, including much of the Congo River Basin.

Debauwi Catfish are best kept in a densely planted aquarium with a sandy or fine gravel substrate, river rock and driftwood or bogwood for shelter. Debauwi catfish like plenty of swimming space, and would benefit from some shading or floating plants to diffuse overhead lighting. They are a tad sensitive to bright lighting and poor water quality, so require a good filtration system with a moderate amount of water movement in the tank.

How big do Debauwi Catfish get?
The Debauwi schooling freshwater catfish reaches a maximum size of around 10cm (4") long.

Compatibility
Debauwi Catfish are best kept in small schools of at least 5, and will do well with other active peaceful species such as Tetras and Loaches in a community tank environment.

Diet
Debauwi catfish are opportunistic feeders that eat worms, crustaceans, insects, and plant matter found on the bottoms of the streams and rivers they inhabit. Feed sinking catfish pellets and algae wafer. Will happily eat bloodworm and brine shrimp (frozen is fine)

Breeding

Egg scatterers that during the rainy season in their natural habitat lay their eggs among fine leaved aquatic plants. A heavily planted habitat with pH 6.0-7.0 would be the ideal conditions for breeding, although they are not known to be commonly bred in captivity. Females generally have thicker bodies than males.

Life Span
Debauwi Catfish can live up to 5-8 years in perfect conditions.
