Orange Venezuelan Corydoras
The Orange Venezuelan Cory Catfish (Corydoras aeneus Venezuela) is a natural geographic colour variant of the Bronze Cory Catfish. The Orange Venezuelan Cory is a very peaceful bottom-feeding schooling fish that is compatible with most popular peaceful community aquarium fish species.
Corydoras thrive in well-oxygenated planted aquariums with plenty of shady areas amongst driftwood and rocks. The presence of mid-swimming fish will help to encourage the Corydoras out more often. Corydoras have the ability to breathe air intestinally, so a gap should be left between the water surface and the fish tank hood/lid to allow the Cory to come up to the surface and take air in. It is perfectly normal for a Corydoras to do this many times a day.
How big do Corys get?
Corys are small fish, with most species growing to around 2.5 (6cm) inches long. The smallest ones are just over an inch and the largest is 5 inches long. Some large, round "stout" examples can be found in well established older long-term aquariums, but this is very rare.
Can Corys sting you?
Many species of catfish, including Corydoras, have defensive spines on their pectoral and dorsal fins that they raise when threatened. Anyone who has ever picked up a common pleco or Dora Catfish knows just how effective these spines can be. Some catfish species do exert a mildly toxic venom or mucous when they prod, which has a sole purpose of keeping the catfish from getting eaten, but it's little more than an ant bite, so really nothing to worry about. If concerned, wear gloves when handling, or simply be wary of the catfish's defensive spines. Be careful when netting, as the spines will often get caught in the net.
Will Corys clean my tank?
As a small bottom feeder, the cory catfish is an extremely efficient cleaner. It will scavenge the leftovers that have sunk to the bottom, cleaning up after messier fish that feed at the surface and midlevel of the tank. However, Corys do not clear algae from aquarium glass and should not be confused with algae-eating species like plecos.
