Many fish keepers in our hobby wake to find their beloved aquarium or pond inhabitants swimming or gasping at the surface of the water, and will assume that its because they cannot get enough oxygen. However, fish gasping at the top of the tank or pond is a common problem that can be caused by several factors.

The order Perciformes contains the cichlids and the anabantoids. The anabantoids contains all gourami's and Siamese fighting fish. Among the well-known members of this group are also perch and darters (Percidae), sea bass and groupers.

Herons, whilst spectacular to look at, are overall negative for garden ponds. Herons will eat the fish and other animals in the pond, and can also damage pond plants and the pond liner with their sharp beaks.
