Preformed ponds can be made from different materials, such as poly, plastic, timber or fibreglass and usually come with long warranties.

In a country where it seems to rain regularly throughout 90% of the year, hosepipe bans can be particularly frustrating for the British pond fishkeeper.

Be careful not to overfill the pond, or this could lead to problems such as fish escaping, filtration systems overflowing or struggling, and waterlogged plants.

Chlorine is used as the principle water-cleaning product in swimming pools, and as a disinfectant in sewage processing and tap water treatment. The most common compound of chlorine is sodium chloride, or simple rock salt.

Weighed bunches can simply be dropped into the pond, but all oxygenating pond plant bundles would benefit from being planted in soil or gravel within a planting basket.

In autumn, trim back dead foliage of hardy waterlilies and let them die back to the bottom of the pond. If you have small, new or tender waterlilies, try and keep them somewhere frost-free over winter.

If left alone, the buildup of detritus in your aquarium or pond will eventually break down into ammonia, so you do not want it to build up. If you have a cycled fish tank, the beneficial bacteria will first oxidize ammonia...

Apart from being robust, the plant grows quickly and will help keep the water conditions optimal by absorbing nitrates and other organic waste byproducts. There are a few pitfalls however.
