In wintertime you should stop feeding pond fish daily when the water temperature drops below 10°C is. Below this temperature, pond fish will start to show less interest in food and will move to the lower reaches of the pond.

Wheatgerm is an easily assimilated, highly digestible daily diet for coldwater fish, and also some tropical fish. Pond fish such as koi, goldfish, koi fry and larger tropical fish (like cichlids) will happily eat wheatgerm pellets.

Herons, whilst spectacular to look at, are overall negative for garden ponds. Herons will eat the fish and other animals in the pond, and can also damage pond plants and the pond liner with their sharp beaks.

The order Cypriniformes contains a vast variety of fish, including all of the carp-like fish (Common carp, koi carp, mirror carp etc) and smaller fish such as barbs, rasboras and danios, plus loaches and others.

If you are concerned that the temperature of your coldwater aquarium will drop below 12°C, for example if it is located in an outbuilding or garage, purchasing a heater to maintain a temperature between 16-20°C might be a good idea.

Rainbow Shiners are shoaling fish, when kept in a school of 6 to 8, but will do much better in groups larger than 10. It is good to keep a mixture of males and females together, as the males will display to potential mates and show off their colours.

Rainbow shiners only grow to around 3 inches maximum, so they can be kept in an indoor coldwater aquarium, or an outdoor pond. Rainbow shiners can tolerate a range of temperatures, and are mid to upper level swimmers in an aquarium.

Shubunkin Goldfish are a great addition to an outdoor filtered pond, or a well-filtered indoor coldwater aquarium (while small and manageable).

The Shubunkin was created by Yoshigoro Akiyama by crossing Calico telescope eye with a Comet goldfish and a Common goldfish.

The White Cloud Mountain minnow is a hardy species of freshwater fish and coldwater fish often kept in an aquarium. The species is a member of the carp family of the order Cypriniformes, native to China.
