Planted aquariums or "aquascapes" as they have become known, form a key part of the modern day fish keeping hobby. Planting an aquarium can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience, if you get it right.

Oxygenators photosynthesise underwater creating oxygen, which then dissolves. This is not only essential for all animal life, but also for bacteria which help keep the pond water clear.

Weighed bunches can simply be dropped into the pond, but all oxygenating pond plant bundles would benefit from being planted in soil or gravel within a planting basket.

In autumn, trim back dead foliage of hardy waterlilies and let them die back to the bottom of the pond. If you have small, new or tender waterlilies, try and keep them somewhere frost-free over winter.

Apart from being robust, the plant grows quickly and will help keep the water conditions optimal by absorbing nitrates and other organic waste byproducts. There are a few pitfalls however.

Water lettuce is not a hardy pond plant and will not tolerate low temperatures or harsh sunlight (excessive heat). It is recommended that water lettuce is brought inside over winter.

Water Lettuce floating pond plants also helps to reduce algae blooms by blocking sunlight in the water and by using up the nutrients needed for the algae to bloom. Water lettuce is a valuable oxygenator and provides shade for fish and fish fry.
